The Kulaimano Wastewater Treatment Plant in Pepeekeo dumped about 70,000 gallons of partially treated sewage after a pump failed Sunday night.

The discharge happened from 6 p.m. Sunday to 8:30 a.m. Monday, according to a press release.

According to the release, a return pump failed, which allowed solid material to get into the materials being discharged.

The flow was redirected into an empty tank as workers corrected the problem, the release said.

Part of the shoreline has been marked with warning signs, advising against swimming, fishing and boating in the area. The signs will remain up until the Department of Health approves their removal, said Dora Beck, chief of the county’s Wastewater Division.
